HISTORY OF THE REGIONAL SINGING

In the early 1960’s when the Swope Parkway congregation was located at 39th & Michigan in Kansas City, Missouri, the Mid-West area Churches of Christ conducted gospel meetings which included dinner on one Sunday with an afternoon program of group singing. While in Wichita one time, Charles Hervey a member of 39th & Michigan and his cousin Nayman Hervey of the then 11th & Hydraulic congregation talked about finding a way that more time could be given to singing. The singing was so enjoyable that nobody want to stop when it was time. Charles brought the idea to Marion V. Holt, minister of the 39th & Michigan congregation and he suggested that they talk with the other congregations about a special time in October to begin the singing on Saturday evening from 6:00 until about 10:00 p.m., and continue on Sunday afternoon with a second session. Everyone like the idea and the first Mid-West Regional Singing was held at the 39th Street congregation in 1966. The groups were from the states of Kansas, Missouri Nebraska and Oklahoma. Each congregation took turns hosting the singing. The Regional Singing began with seven groups and has now grown to thirteen.
